Signal-driven sound processing for uncontrolled environments (with Dirkjan Krijnders 2006-2009)
The PhD-project of Dirkjan Krijnders focused on the question what kind of signal processing is necessary for sound recognition in a truly open environment. Normally signal processing for sound recognition assumes that system input is known to some degree. For example in Speech Recognition the more is known about the input the higher the probability that the system is able to recognize the input correctly. In practice when everything is known about teh input (speaker, language, topic, recording conditions) the system is able to figure out the word order. When the input is for example the sound of pasing cars the system will threat this as valid speech and it might even produce the sequence of words that matches best.
The problem woth uncontrolled environments is that everything can happen and that it is impossible to predict what type of input the system can expect. What is needed is a form of signal processing in which the signal itself tells the system what kind of input is present so that the system can adapt its function to the main structures in the the input. The work of Dirkjan Krijnders helps to detect, isolate, and describes the pulses and tones in the signal, it can combine tones in harmonic complexes and it leads to a description of these signal components in a way taht is indicative for the type of sounds present.
